Hi, I'm Ildiko

Welcome to the Weekend Enthusiast! A collection of travel, lifestyle, restaurant reviews and home of the Edinburgh Enthusiast.

What to do this weekend: 2-4 August

What to do this weekend: 2-4 August

Happy festival month! In the next few editions of the Weekend Guide during August I’ll be adding some Friday recommendations - in case you’re planning a night out. I will also add some options to escape the crowds, as the city centre is expected to be super busy during this month. Enjoy!

Visit Bowhill House

Escape the festival with a daytrip to the Scottish Borders. The stunning Bowhill House is open for the season and daily guided tours of the house run at noon, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm throughout August. If you’re up for some more adventure, you can also sign up for their Land Rover tours which take you through the vast estate.

Jorum Studio at Jenners

The Scottish fragance house, Jorum Studio is popping up at Jenners between 29 July and 26 August. They have teamed up with some other lovely local businesses, including Solas Neon, Sweetdram, Boom Saloon, Pyrus Botanicals and others. Pop in for a Scottish olfactive experience!

Chill Fest

Escape the crowds and head to Leith for reasonably priced cocktails. For only £5 you can buy a Chill Fest wristband which will give you access to £5 limited edition cocktails during the entire month of August. Sounds fab, doesn't it? It's also the perfect excuse to explore Leith's cocktail scene.

EIF Opening Event

This year’s Edinburgh International Festival Aberdeen Standard Investments Opening Event features the amazing Los Angeles Philharmonics at Tynecastle. The programme includes classic movie music from the Golden Age of Hollywood. And the good news: tickets are free! Will you be joining?

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo

This year’s Tattoo theme is Kaleidoscope, celebrating glorious symmetries set against the majestic backdrop of Edinburgh Castle. Did you know that the optical invention was created by Scottish physicist, Sir David Brewster in 1816? One of my favourite parts of the show is the RAF Flypast which you only get to see on a few dates. Although I do not have details of the exact aircraft types, we can expect a Tattoo Flypast this Saturday sometime between 6.05pm and 6.30pm. Bruntsfield Links are a pretty cool spot to photograph them if you do not have tickets for the Tattoo. Possible other flypast dates and times are between 7.50pm and 8.20pm on 7, 9 and 13 August.

Foodie Sunday

Foodies Festival comes to Inverleith Park for the whole weekend, so fingers crossed for decent weather! Watch top chefs cooking live on stage such as the Great British Menu Winner 2019 at Andrew Fairlie’s Restaurant Gleneagles Lorna McNee, Neil Forbes at Cafe St Honore and many others. Buy tickets here.

Have a nice weekend!
